REFLECTION REPORT 03
I. Details of the event/activity
The title of the event that I attended was StackLeague x Manulife Tech Session: Modern IT Delivery on Cloud, held on October 5, 2022, 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event was conducted online via YouTube and Facebook Live.
II. Reflections on the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)
While the event was about emerging software, such as deploying serverless applications, many things discussed went over my head. They were too complex and out of my specialty to simply comprehend everything. But, one thing that opened up a new perspective is hosting a server as a company. It made me think about how every decision has risks and rewards, as multiple critical factors are involved. As far as I know, serverless is becoming a trend. The speakers were saying that it is not the future but the present. Although it has many pros that perform way better than similar technologies, it's not perfect. Migrating to serverless may be an improvement, but changing one aspect of something can affect others for the better or worse.
After the event, I can only say there are lots of things in the world of programming left unexplored for me to try. The waves of technological advancement are always on the move, and new things emerge every day. That's why we have to ride with the tide and go with the flow.
III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical level (practical application of learnings)
Since I only focus on the front-end side of web development, I can't relate much to the deployment of serverless applications. But what I do know is migrating from one implementation to another takes a lot of time, effort, and especially money. Before doing so, we need to understand what it does from all sides, how we will benefit, and all its downsides. Which might either bring positive outcomes for the whole application or be a total waste of energy switching to one another.
IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)
The event's energy never went down, as the hosts kept checking if the audience was watching and engaged by asking questions relevant to the event. Also, the speakers were exceptional, as they discussed the topics confidently and thoroughly.
V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities
There were technical issues surrounding the event, which held back the topics from starting or proceeding. Luckily, the hosts knew what to do and started an icebreaker game to keep the audience entertained while fixing the issues with the technical staff.
