Webinar on Overview on Copyright

REFLECTION REPORT 02

I. Details of the event/activity

The title of the event that I attended was Webinar on Overview on Copyright, held on September 23, 2022, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event was conducted online via Zoom Teleconference.

II. Reflections on the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)

Ever since I was young, I was not a stranger to downloading music, movies, and especially games from illegal websites. Everyone was doing it, so I assumed it was normal until I reached Senior High School. My course was Information and Communications Technology, so having a subject about Media and Information Literacy was to be anticipated. As we tackled the topic of Digital Piracy, when the instructor asked who illegally downloads their movies and other stuff, almost everyone raised their hands. I knew everyone was guilty about it, as expected. After that, the room burst into laughter, knowing what we did was wrong but not a hundred percent sure why. Maybe we were oblivious to the severe consequences and what are some of the worst possibilities that could happen to us once we get caught.

After attending this webinar, I became much more aware of the consequences of my actions. Not just towards myself, but to those who own the copyrighted materials I pirated. One person doing it and sharing it with thousands or millions will negatively impact the livelihood of the creators/owners, especially indie creators. Someday, when some of us become like them, we will get to taste our own medicine.

III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical level (practical application of learnings)

The event showed what lines not to cross when dealing with copyrighted materials. While we students have been used to watching movies for educational purposes and using songs as background music, there are still some limits to what is acceptable and not. We, as event organizers, should be mindful of the things we do not own, whether we can share them with the audience or not.

IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)

The webinar's audio, video, and presentation were clear, while the speaker talked through the topics enthusiastically, as he showed the importance of the matters discussed to the audience. The speaker also showed step-by-step how to copyright our works and how it would help us in case we come across problems in the future.

V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities

The event should include some examples that could relate to the audience. Since the audience is students of Computer Studies, giving examples regarding software copyrights and how it works within our field might help increase audience engagement.
